Warehouse technology moves fast. AGVs, autonomous picking systems, IoT sensors, connected wearables: operations that would have seemed futuristic a few years ago are now standard in mid-size fulfilment centres across the UK.
The Wi-Fi has to keep up. And for a lot of warehouses, it isn’t.
This post explains what the latest Wi-Fi standards, particularly Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7, actually mean for your warehouse operation. No technical jargon, no spec sheet comparisons. Just a plain-language answer to the question operations managers are starting to ask: what does this mean for us, and do we need to upgrade?
Wi-Fi standards have been evolving for decades, but the jump from older standards to Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 is more significant than most previous upgrades. The reason is that these standards were designed for environments that look a lot like modern warehouses: large numbers of devices, real-time data requirements, and zero tolerance for dropped connections.
Older Wi-Fi standards were built around the assumption that a relatively small number of devices would be connected at any one time. In a warehouse running AGVs, handheld scanners, tablets, IoT sensors, CCTV, and WMS terminals all on the same network, that assumption breaks down quickly. The network starts struggling, and the symptoms show up as scanner dropouts, laggy WMS response times, and automation systems that pause unexpectedly.
Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 address this directly. They handle more devices simultaneously, more efficiently, with less interference and lower latency. For warehouses, that’s not a marginal improvement. It’s the difference between a network that keeps pace with automation and one that holds it back.
The honest answer to what Wi-Fi 7 means depends on what you’re currently running and what you’re planning to add. Here’s a plain-language breakdown of the three changes that matter most in a warehouse context.
Every device on your Wi-Fi network is competing for airtime. On older standards, devices essentially take turns: one transmits, then the next, then the next. When you have dozens of AGVs, hundreds of IoT sensors, and a full picking team all competing simultaneously, the wait times add up.
Wi-Fi 6 introduced a smarter approach that lets an access point serve multiple devices at the same time rather than in sequence. Wi-Fi 7 takes this further, handling even higher device densities with greater efficiency.
In practical terms: you can add more automation to your warehouse, more robots, more sensors, more connected devices, without the network becoming the bottleneck. The infrastructure scales with the operation rather than constraining it.
When people think about Wi-Fi speed, they usually think about how quickly a file downloads or a video loads. That’s not where speed matters in a warehouse. What matters is how quickly an AGV receives a navigation instruction, how fast a WMS confirms a scan, how rapidly a sensor reading reaches the system that acts on it.
Wi-Fi 7 significantly reduces the time between a device sending a request and receiving a response. For human users, this difference is imperceptible. For automation systems making thousands of decisions per hour, it’s meaningful. Instructions arrive faster, responses are processed in real time, and the automation runs more smoothly as a result.
A warehouse at full operation is a noisy wireless environment. Multiple access points, dozens of active devices, moving equipment, and potentially neighbouring buildings all contribute to interference. On older Wi-Fi standards, this interference degrades performance for everyone on the network.
Wi-Fi 7 introduces better interference management and, where used with the right hardware, access to additional wireless spectrum. The practical result is a more stable, more predictable connection throughout the building, even when the environment is at its most demanding.
Wi-Fi 7 won’t fix a poorly designed network. The technology is genuinely better, but the right hardware in the wrong place, or the right standard with the wrong configuration, will still underperform. The design matters as much as the spec.
Not every warehouse needs to move to Wi-Fi 7 right now. The right answer depends on where you are, what you’re running, and what you’re planning. Here’s a straightforward way to think about it.
Your current Wi-Fi is already struggling. Scanner dropouts, sluggish WMS response times, or dead zones in key areas are all signs that the network isn’t keeping up. Adding automation on top of a struggling network will make things worse, not better. Now is the right time to sort the foundation.
You’re planning to add automation in the next one to two years. If AGVs, autonomous picking systems, or a significant increase in connected devices are on the roadmap, specifying the network around that future state now is considerably cheaper and less disruptive than upgrading the infrastructure after the automation is in place.
You’re doing a significant fit-out or refurbishment. The most cost-effective time to upgrade network infrastructure is when the building is already being worked on. Running new cabling, repositioning access points, and upgrading switches all become far simpler when the site isn’t at full operational capacity.
Your current network is performing well and your automation plans are modest. If your existing infrastructure handles current demand reliably and you’re not planning significant expansion in the near term, there’s no urgent reason to upgrade. Optimise what you have and plan the next step when the time is right.
You upgraded to Wi-Fi 6 recently. Wi-Fi 6 is a solid, capable standard that will serve most warehouses well for several years. If you’re running Wi-Fi 6 and it’s performing reliably, Wi-Fi 7 is worth understanding and planning for, but it isn’t an urgent replacement.
The best time to think about upgrading is before the current network becomes a constraint on your operation, not after it already is. A network upgraded ahead of demand is significantly easier and cheaper to deploy than one retrofitted around live automation.
Between Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7, there’s also Wi-Fi 6E, which adds access to the 6 GHz band for additional wireless spectrum. It’s worth understanding the distinction because it comes up in hardware conversations.
Wi-Fi 6E is a meaningful step up from Wi-Fi 6 in high-density or high-throughput environments. However, access points running Wi-Fi 6E draw more power per unit (this also applies to Wi-Fi 7 since you would also be utilising 6 GHz if using Wi-Fi 7 APs), which has direct implications for the PoE switching budget. For most warehouses, Wi-Fi 6 remains the appropriate baseline; Wi-Fi 6E is the right conversation to have if your device density or throughput requirements push beyond what Wi-Fi 6 handles comfortably.
