Frequently Asked Questions

Wi-Fi Design

Why is a Wi-Fi Design important?

Wi-Fi design is critical to ensure reliable coverage, high performance, and the capacity to support a high numbers of clients. It enhances security, scalability, and support for business-critical applications while minimising costs and downtime. A well-designed network also prepares for future growth and emerging technologies, ensuring long-term efficiency and compliance with industry standards.

What should be included in a Wi-Fi design?

This varies based on customer requirements, however at a minimum the design should include customer requirements, evidence of coverage and capacity requirements being met via heatmaps generated by professional software such as Ekahau, floorplans with access point locations, installation details such as heights and mounting methods as well as a bill of materials. Designs can be much more than this and include details such as channel planning, photos of access point locations, network configuration and a redundant design.

How do you validate a Wi-Fi design?

We validate our designs by using Ekahau software to predictively model our customer requirements. Once completed we like to get on-site to conduct a site survey to confirm our modelling is accurate, and validate the customer requirements are being met. Once the design is implemented and equipment deployed, we return to perform our Wi-Fi Validation survey to ensure everything is configured and deployed as designed. We can help you to then perpetually monitor the Wi-Fi design performance through monitoring and correct KPI configuration via your wireless vendor dashboards/controllers or implement a monitoring overlay.

Wi-Fi Surveys

Is a Wi-Fi survey really required?

Most likely yes! A Wi-Fi survey can be used to confirm all your coverage and capacity requirements are being met, identify sources of interference and help troubleshoot on-site issues.

How do you perform wi-fi surveys?

We use Ekahau site survey software running on either an iPad or laptop along with the Ekahau Sidekick v2 to capture data on 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz channels! Our Engineers will walk around the site capturing as much data as needed. Depending on the scope of the survey we not only capture Wi-Fi data but also information such as access point location information, photos, install details, identify sources of interference, rogue access points and identify security risks.

Why is a Wi-Fi survey expensive?

When everything comes back as okay, customers often feel like they didn't gain anything for the cost of a Wi-Fi survey. In truth they did; they confirmed that their network has been installed and configured as per the design. Can you afford the risk of a site going into production without confirming everything is setup correctly? A survey that finds no problems gives you that piece of mind knowing that on that date the network was setup correctly and performing as expected. When things go wrong, you have that to fall back on and work backwards from.

Can you help with a wi-fi survey?

Yes, simply reach out to us! Our team have completed Wi-Fi surveys using Ekahau at some of the largest Wi-Fi deployments in the world, from distribution centres, head offices, manufacturing plants and huge hotels we have you covered. Please get in touch via the contact form at the bottom of this page to hear how we can help with your survey needs.

Wi-Fi Troubleshooting

What are the most common causes of a poor Wi-Fi?

1) Poor Wi-Fi design: It all starts with a solid Wi-Fi design. You cannot configure your way out of a poor design. Make sure whoever is designing your network is using industry standard tooling and software. Coverage is the easiest part, make sure that capacity and interference is also being considered. 2) Interference: often caused nearby Wi-Fi networks or motion sensors. 3) Poorly configured network: We often see networks setup with default configurations such as 80MHz wide channels ad full transmit power.

What causes wi-fi interference?

Wi-Fi interference is caused by many things, the most common are microwaves, baby monitors, radar and PIR/motion sensors often used for lights. Wi-Fi interference can bring down production of your facility, prevent stable calls such as zoom and teams and leave a poor opinion of your venue if your guest have a poor Wi-Fi experience. We uses spectrum analysers to identify these interferers and provide our recommended next steps.
